What is Matter?

Matter is a new unifying smart home standard that simplifies how smart devices work together. It helps to futureproof your home by ensuring compatibility across all major smart home ecosystems.

Essentials Matter products require a Matter compatible Smart Home Hub and Thread border router.

How can I control this Downlight?

What are the benefits of Thread compared to Bluetooth?

While you can set up and use the downlight over Bluetooth with the Nanoleaf App, it must be used over Thread to fully utilise its Matter capabilities and connect to other smart home ecosystems.

With Thread, you get the benefits of improved reliabilty, faster speeds, fewer dropped connections, increased range, and lower power consumption. You'll also unlock usage of the Nanoleaf Desktop App and the Screen Mirror feature.

Running Matter over Thread allows you to connect your downlight to your smart home ecosystem, control it with voice commands and gain remote access and additional customization features.

[A Thread border router is required to use Thread, and a smart home hub is required to run Matter over Thread]

What do I need to use it?

A Matter-comptaible smart home hub and a Thread Border Router is required to connect your Matter lights to a smart home ecosystem and for the full set of features and benefits of Matter over Thread.Learn More.- Apple Home: iOS and tvOS 16.5 or newer

The bulb can also be used over Bluetooth directly only with the Nanoleaf App, but without the additional benefits of Matter over Thread.

Can multiple bulbs be controlled together?

Yes, you can control multiple devices at the same time with the Group Scene function in the Nanoleaf App. Additionally, you can group devices together for unified control in the app of your smart home ecosystem of choice (ie. Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings).

Can I use this downlight with a traditional dimmer switch?

No. Smart downlights in general are not compatible with traditional dimmer switches, because smart downlights have their own built-in dimming mechanism that may clash with the dimmer switch.

How do I install these Downlights?

Refer to the physical setup section of the user manual. We strongly suggest working with a qualified electrician if you are not familiar with electrical systems.

Connectivity issues

I bought these lights when I did some renos to my house. Having owned nanoleaf lights previously I was excited and hopeful. So I got them installed and trying to get them connected to the app was a nightmare. They would often lose connection making the smart functionality redundant. I tried adding them to Google home and no luck. Contacted customer service and they informed me I needed a matter hub. I had bought a Google tv streamer which is a matter hub but apparently not the right matter hub. So I could connect the lights and the app recognized a thread network but the lights would constantly drop off the app. So then I had to buy a nest hub gen 2 which I really didn't need because I already had two gen 1 hubs in my house so there was yet another expense that the website doesn't inform you of especially considering just the native app itself doesnt provide a stable enough connection. So now I have all my lights up and running through Google. Great right? Wrong. I have automations programmed for these lights. So for example in the morning the six lights in my kitchen are suppose to turn on. Quite often I'll come down to see 4/6 lights on. Then I have to go into the nanoleaf app and turn the lights on through there because Google is saying they are offline. When I look at the lights I have with Philips Hue they work so easily and so seamlessly, however you pay for that. In short when these lights work they are great, but there's a lot of fighting I have had to do to get these running and they still don't always run properly.
